Ancient Castle in Scotland – Ethie Castle dates from the 14th century and was immortalised by Sir Walter Scott as Knockwinnioch in his novel The Antiquary. It’s an impressive sandstone structure with turrets and towers set in pretty gardens near Arbroath in Angus. Dramatic sea cliffs are within walking distance and it’s close to Kirriemuir, where J.M. Barrie was born, and Glamis Castle, of Macbeth fame. The interior is traditional, with roaring fires and cosy double rooms.
Romance factor: Log fires and crashing waves.
